Find where pets live

A 60-second map of Codex App, terminal, IDE, and hatch flows.

Use the Codex App

The Codex App is the primary surface for buyers. The pet renders as a floating overlay on macOS and Windows, reflects Codex state, and stays visible while work continues in other apps.

Install from terminal

The terminal runs the Hatchery install path. The MCP server resolves the pet, writes it into the local Codex home, and leaves the App to render what was installed.

bashterminal
npx the-hatchery install kernel
codex /pet

Share the IDE config

The IDE extension uses the same MCP configuration because Codex stores MCP settings in config.toml. A pet installed from the terminal will be available to the IDE and App as long as they read the same Codex home.

Place /hatch correctly

Inside Codex, /hatch is OpenAI's local generation command. It is useful for one-off generated pets and experiments.

The Hatchery complements /hatch. It provides creator-made marketplace pets, install IDs, pages, metadata, and a repeatable MCP install path.
